Ethiopian Athletes at the London 2012 Olympics and their schedules

The 2012 London olympics was officially opened yesterday with a marvelous grand show directed by Danny Boyle. The opening ceremony took the attending audience and the television viewers on a journey of the British history, culture and tradition in a magnificent show of acting, music, dancing, choreography and lighting accompanied by a wonderful fireworks. Though a depleted Ethiopian team made a mini-elevated entrance with most of its athletes absent from the parade, Haile Gebreselassie was chosen as one of the 8 bearers of the Olympics flag.

Ethiopia has fielded a total of 35 athletes all but two taking part in athletics and the others competing in 50m freestyle swimming. To recap a little bit of history of Ethiopia in Olympics, Ethiopia started olympics participation in the 1956 Melbourne olympics in athletics and cycling competition. It got its first ever medal, the first Gold won by an African, in 1960 Rome Olympics and has strengthened its athletics team to be a reckoned force in medium and long distance running events. The team got its medal heyday in the 2000 Sydney Olympics where they won 8 medals including 4 gold medals.
