Tirunesh Dibaba a.k.a ‘the baby face destroyer ‘ once again reigned on the 10000m women race at London Olympics. Tirunesh comfortably settled in the middle of the leading pack that was isolated after a wonderful work from fellow team mate Worknesh Kidane and bursted with an incredible pace with more than one lap to go. With the whole crowd roaring behind her Tirunesh gradually widened the gap between her and runner up kenyans Sally Kipyego and Vivian Cheriot of Kenya to finish the race at 30:20.75 leaving a gap of around 50m between her and the second place Kenyan.
Tirunesh was out of competition for the majority of the year due to injury and there were slight fear that she might not be able to defend her Olympic title against the ever challenging Kenyans. But thanks to an incredible team work and her majestic finishing sprint she was able to get her third Olympic Gold medal that puts her in par with Kenenisa Bekele as the most decorated Olympian of Ethiopia. Tirunesh has the chance to add more Gold to her tally as she will take part in the 5000m competition at London 2012. Tirunesh proved that she has shaken of the injury that plagued her career for two years and we expect another mouth-watering struggle with Meseret Defar for the 5000m Gold.
After her win Tirunesh said “I have never been happier. I was not even that happy in Beijing. No one has ever done what I did today.” Her manager stated that the Kenyans tried to control the race and pressure Tirunesh but she was comfortable in the race to finish the race in a spectacular burst. He indicated that there is a long-term plan for Tirunesh to move towards Marathon after London 2012 and many agree that she has the ability to break a new world record in marathon held by the British Paula Radcliffe.
