Tirunesh Dibaba had to settle for the Bronze.
All eyes were on Tirunesh Dibaba before the 5000m women’s final at the London 2012 Olympics. After her dominant display in the 10000m and the 5000m qualification, Tirunesh was the favorite to defend her 5000m title from Beijing and be the next athlete in the London Olympics to defend a title at two different races together with the great Usain Bolt. Had she won the Gold medal that would have made her the most decorated Olympian in Ethiopia above Kenenisa Bekele who won three gold and one silver medal in 5000m and 10000m races.
But it was Meseret who eventually came out superior and turn the tide on Tirunesh to become the current Olympic champion and hand back her former champion title back to Tirunesh. The race settled into a slow pace that created one big group of athletes until Tirunesh decided to step up and inject a pace in the race. Two laps to go, Tirunesh injected more pace to further islote the front pack which consisted of three Kenyans and three Ethiopians. 200m to the end Tirunesh and Meseret dashed to the finishing line as Meseret showed that she has a bit more energy to overtake Tirunesh and win the race. Tirunesh was also caught by her Kenyan rival Cheruiyot to take the Bronze medal.
