The fifth Ethiopian Orthodox Patriarch His Holiness Abuna Paulos, Fifth Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, Ichege of the See of St. Tekle Haymanot, Archbishop of Axum and one of the seven serving Presidents of the World Council of Churches passed away on August 16, 2012 at 5:00am in an Ethiopian Hospital. The pope recently suffered a deterioration of health and was rushed to Dej. Balcha Hospital in the capital Addis Ababa where he was pronounced dead.
Abune Paulos rose to the helm of the Orthodox Church after the removal of the marxist regime which imprisoned him in 1992 and recently celebrated his 20 year coronation anniversary at the Sheraton Hotel where an enormous HIV and TB Research Hospital was to be built under his name. His guidance of the church faced a continuous criticism that he is courteous to the ruling party but many remember his tremendous effort to establish relations with other churches and reorganize the relief efforts of the church. His official state funeral is to be held on August 23, 2012 with a lot of high level dignitaries from different Churches, governments and international organizations expected to attend the event.
